Yes, Abortion is way, way safer than giving birth.

They are simply stating the truth. Why is the truth bad?

It’s the truth. Sometimes the truth isn’t pretty.

Pregnancy and delivery is riskier than abortions. Especially early term abortions.

Plain and simple, it is safer. Not sure what else to say…

@firsttimemom: I could see why its safer. Just not as rewarding to many 🙂

It may be safer physically but what about psychologically?

“The guidance also says that women who are deciding whether to have an abortion must be told that most do not suffer any psychological harm”

I find that very hard to believe. And even if they could prove it was true, how does that determine whether or not the woman will regret it?

@firsttimemom: You are implying that the doctors being advised to tell paitents that is wrong. If you agreed with it, you would not have started this thread.

@SoontobeMrsA: There are places in the US that used to be required to state that you may experience psycological harm after getting an abortion. They did extensive studies on the after effects of abortion, and that was debunked. It was basically a way of policy-makers trying to undo years of harmful advice that was mandated.

Well… they’re just telling the truth. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. I think this is probably something that women in certain situations should know.

For instance, if the pregnancy is unwanted, having an abortion will result in fewer complications than giving birth and then giving the child up for adoption.

Also, some pregnancies are unviable (i.e. certain trisomies, or other genetic defects), and aborting is safer than giving birth. (Some people choose to give birth and then watch their child die over a period of hours or days. Personally, I think that is torture, but they’re welcome to their choice.)

Now obviously, if you want to have a child, you’re willing to put up with the risks of carrying and delivering a baby. So people in this boat can disregard the abortion advice, since nothing is going to change their mind.

But this is truthful and useful information for some, so I see no problem with it.

I only scanned the article, but I think that British doctors are being advised to tell this to women who are considering abortion, not just to every woman who finds out she’s pregnant. I think that women should be given as much scientific fact as possible when making decisions for themselves–so if it’s true that abortion is generally safer than full-term pregnancy, then I do think that’s a fact that doctors should provide. I assume that the doctors would also contextualize this for their patients by pointing out that full-term pregnancy carries very low risks in developed countries, while also tailoring their advice to each woman’s specific case.

Hmmm I know several women who had abortions and regretted it. I just think it’s unfair to women to imply that they will not regret it.

I don’t think it’s fair to imply that women will regret it OR that they won’t regret it. No one can possibly predict that. The article, however, speaks the truth–abortion is safer than giving birth.
