@kryssbride:  I used to say, “Well if we’re going to be poor, let’s be the best poor people we can be!”  Then think of all the creative ways you can have fun for free.  Sometimes it means you got to get creative with Ramen!

Not a newlywed, but we’re waiting to get married because of my debt, so it won’t hit him so hard.

I have to file bankruptcy. My mom used my SSN to put me $30+K in debt, and I’m on a fixed income (disabled). I ignored it for a long time, because I simply couldn’t deal, and my mom (gambling addict + credit card junkie) would make promises to fix it… and then nothing.

Trouble is, I’m having issues figuring out what’s gone to collections, what credit cards I have, and it actually costs money to file… so I have a huge pain in my butt to deal with… but I just can’t put my mom in jail. Which would probably be even more paperwork anyway.

Sorry ya’ll are going through this. I feel your pain.

We used to have a lot more in savings but my fiance has decided to put a ton of money into a new business so we’re going to be broke for awhile. :(It makes buying every little thing for the wedding very annoying, especially since it’s a week away and I’m like I DONT CARE WHAT IT COST.. WILL IT SAVE ME TIME?!!!!! I AM SO STRESSED OUT  and then I get depressed when I look at my checking account.
I still haven’t bought my wedding night lingerie 🙁

We got home from the honeymoon to some quite costly vet bills after spending double what expected on the honeymoon… so we had around $5000 in debt post wedding but it cleared up pretty quickly thankfully!!!

And what do we go and do… get a $330k mortgage lol.

I voted 100, 000+ but that includes our mortgage.  We aren’t married and the mortgage is only in my name.  We both have recent auto loans, too.

We have a lot of student loan debt (all FI’s) that will still be there when we are newlyweds, but you find a way to get through it together.

We aren’t married yet, but thankfully our only debt (my Fiance is wonderful and considers it “our debt”) is my $6k car loan and my $40k student loans. He’s going back to school but will be getting grants that cover everything and then some. I am underemployed and he is unemployed and looking. Minimal cc debt (I might have $30 on my Target card right now). No loans or anything for the wedding, though we are getting bits of help here and there from family (his mom has been a blessing for us). With any luck, I’ll have a better paying job soon and then Fiance is done in spring 2015 and will get a great job after that.

@VioletSky:  I am so happy to hear your H got a job!  That is great news!

Have you looked into Dave Ramsey’s steps to help you get out of debt?  I am not a huge fan of his but he has gotten people out of debt!
