Mrs Moonbeam had posted about loosing half her toenail from running a 1/2 marathon…
I just lost 1/2 mine 6 months after running a 5k. It was purple for about 6 months and now I have half a toe nail… so for all you runners out there that have had this happen how long does it take to grow back? Is there anything that can be done to speed the healing/growing process?
FYI – the wedding is 8 months away

I lost a few toe nails when I trained YEARS ago for a marathon. It’s just part of the training. I haven’t heard of anything you can do but perhaps if you look online or google you might see something. I think you’ll be fine with your wedding 8 months away.

I lost one in basketball…it took FOREVAH to grow back.
In rare cases the nerve can be damaged and it can never grow back (my mom’s for one). She bought stick-on acrylic toenails and was so excited to not have ugly nails, so WORST case scenario (btw i think 8 months is plenty of time for a nail to grow back) you get a sticky nail for your toe.

I had this happen, though not due to running. Fiance and I had a piggybacking while under the influence incident on New Year’s Eve a few years back. It took 6-8 months for my toenail to grow back to normal. I lost almost all the toenail. One thing that might help speed the healing porocess is liquid vitamin A and vitamin C.

I used to have this happen from playing sports, but unfortunately I have no suggestions for speeding up the process (other than taking vitamins i. e. biotin or Vitamin C) Just keep an eye on it to make sure that it doesn’t become ingrown as it is growing back!

There isn’t much you can do to help speed your nail growth up. You can take vitamins, like prenatals and stuff, and that might help a little, but you just need time! If your nail isn’t completely grown out by the time of your wedding, go have a fake one put on! People do it all the time, and they don’t look fake.

@speechie I am going to see my podiatrist today to make sure everything is ok.
I’m just in need of some good vibes b/c I am deathly afraid of all things toe related, just knowing that the podiatrist is going to touch my foot and he touches other peoples feet (yes I know there are gloves and hand washing involved) is scaring me.
I am totally stressed out that I will not have my toenail back by August.

I think as long as you take vitamins it should grow back in time. Especially since the entire toe nail isn’t gone. Worst case scenario they have the stick on toe nails that you can put over all your nails and it looks like you have a french pedicure. Don’t worry about the doctor, they won’t give you an infection or anything!

- Wedding: March 2010 - Calamigos Ranch
This happened to me in July–the nail (about 2/3 of it) finally fell off in September–and it’s just about completely grown back in now. I don’t know how much the vitamins help, but it should grow back pretty fast. I’d be careful about pedicures until it’s grown back in, though… you don’t want them to paint the callous and then have the nail grow in over the paint!

This happened to me before… I caught my big toe under a door (ooow) and the whole nail ended up falling off. It grew back in about 6 months from what I recall. You should be fine for the wedding, try not to stress 🙂

This happened to me once as a kid–my foot was stepped on by a horse at Girl Scout camp! 🙁 It took a while to grow back, so I don’t know what would speed up the process. I will say that I agree with Spaniel–you might want to hold off on the pedicure until it’s grown back in.

I had this happen @ soccer, and the nail was back to normal (guessing!) ~4 mos later…I wouldn’t worry about it yet, unless you think there is a medical (not aesthetic) issue

I just completed a marathon in October and lot 2 toenails! My big toenail and the one next to it! They are almost grown back, I would say another 2 months and I will be back perfect again! They fell off about the begining of September! So i would say 5 or 6 months! Make sure when you are running that you keep your toenails cut short and wear thicker running cocks like Thurlo and make sure your shoes are at least a hlaf size larger than what you normally wear! Feet swell when running!

Ah! That’s gross! I didn’t realize that happened because of running!!
Fiance had a finger nail popped back on a construction job in April, he had to wait for his new nail to grow in to kick out the old one. (It was so gross!) It was back in within a few months. Definitely by that August, so about 4 months or so? You should be good. I agree-take vitamins & such for nails. I think biotin works for nails, but I’m not sure. I know it does for hair!

so after a marathon length shopping trip i too have a bruised toe nail. does this mean the nail is going to fall off? btw feel free to laugh, i ALWAYS have the lamest injuries. 🙂
