Research local vendors to determine an average price?

I just kind of guessed at mine and so far I’m on track.

I used The Knots budget maker, which doesn’t take in to account where you are planning a wedding. But it does break down your expenses.

To determine how much we wanted and could spend, we looked at our finances, decided what could easily be cut and what couldn’t and figured out what was left over after our regular savings. That total came to about 1K/month.

Personally I would decide how much you can afford to spend – take into accounts any generous offers from other family members as well.  Once you know that, you can go into any sort of budget wedding tracker on weddingchannel.com or theknot.com.  They give you rough estimates on what things cost – you can eliminate things that you don’t want to have or add in things that you feel are necessary but not included on the generic list.

You might be surprised that some things can be negotiable – venues might be willing to cut you a break on things if you do the wedding at an off-time or an off-day.  You’ll be paying premium for a Saturday night most likely.

I track EVERYTHING – even things that just cost a few dollars – because it adds up quickly.  To me, I am not willing to go into debt over the wedding so the budget is extremely important.
