Even though the Boyfriend or Best Friend and I aren’t engaged (yet) I’d still like to get a better grip on our finances. We have separate bank accounts, however, we use our money as if it is one.
In the past, I’ve tried:
-Setting up little glass mason jars with labels like “FOOD,” “GAS,” “WEEKEND FUN,” and putting cash into them. When the cash was gone, that was it. Well.. that failed. Big time. We dipped into credit cards when we ran out.
-I bought a monthly planner. Each month I add up our bills (cable, internet, electricity, etc) and subtract that from our combined monthly income. Then I take the remainder and try and create a budget with that. This fails too, because one week we’re relying on just my paycheck, and 4 bills are due… so we’re left with $20. And then the next week the Boyfriend or Best Friend gets paid and we overcompensate because for the last 6 days we’ve been eating nothing but noodles. It’s hard to figure out a budget based on when we get paid.
Sure, when everything’s added up and subtracted MONTHLY, it looks awesome. But week-by-week, it’s sh*t.
Is there any budget/finance software/websites that you use that is helpful in creating a budget? I love graphs and charts, anything visual. I guess I wouldn’t mind paying for a finance program, as long as it was actually good.
