Background: My boyfriend and I started talking about rings a few weeks ago. Many of our friends are starting to look at rings or already have gotten engaged (we are both 26). When we first starting talking, before we even started looking, I had in my mind to get a center diamond around .75 – 1 carat. Most of our friends have diamonds that size and so do many of our family members.
The problem started when we actually started looking. Let’s say shell shocked was my boyfriend’s response. He couldn’t believe his friends spent anywhere from $5K to $7K or more on a ring (he called and asked several of them).
This led to a bit of a fight because apparently he thought a “1 carat” would cost in the vicinity of $1,000. I am not demanding he buy me a big ring, and I even offered to pay for part of it, but he is very stubborn that it should be a gift from him and will not take money from anyone else for it.
His aunt offered us a diamond from a pair of earings she had. She had lost the other earing so she has a round stud of 0.4 carat from the remaining earing. We did accept her gracious offer.
So the budget for the setting is $1,200. My boyfriend wants me to pick it out since I’ll be the one wearing it.
If any of you Bees can point me in good places to go for smaller settings I would appreciate it. I have been to many local jewelers and most have settings and diamonds in the 1 carat range. Many are also not willing to custom order a setting for me since the diamond is rather small.
I know that I do not want a solitaire or a 3 stone ring. I also do not want gemstones. I don’t necessarily need a set with a matching band as we will purchase that later. Any setting suggestions would be great too.
Sorry this turned out so long. I was feeling like a deflated balloon but then I found several posts on smaller diamonds and got excited at how pretty the rings are.
Thanks for the help.
