Just as there are weight support threads, I think we need a BUDGET support thread. I’ve got five months to go and don’t have nearly as much as I’d like saved up. Sigh. But non wedding planning friends are still going out to eat, going shopping, etc. I still need new work shoes, only have one pair of jeans, and am desperate for a haircut (havent had one since may!!!)
Come on budget bees! Let’s be a support system to one another and remind each other WHY we’re pinching our pennies.

I think this is a great idea! Support is important!
I have started bringing my lunch to work, cooking dinner at home, and have cut my Starbucks trips to once a week. Fiance and I haven’t been going out much at all. We are finding things to do at home… like play board games. We are having a lot of fun and are spending a lot more time together. It really has been great. I still have the urge to go shopping, but I just keep trying to remember that in just a few months I am going to need to be spending the money on wedding related things.

Our wedding is over, but we’re saving up for a down payment, and our plan is to save my entire salary and just live on his, so I could definitely use some budget support!

You’re right that saving money is a lot like dieting. It’s really hard to get into the habit of not buying that latte on the way to work or having that extra snack. I find it a lot easier to do things proactively, like go for a run or work some extra hours to get more money than cut back on things, like reducing calories or not spending.
But what I find helps is turning things into a fun project, like bringing your own lunch for example. It’s a great way to eat healthy (because how healthy is most lunch food really) and it’s kind of fun to plan a menu for the whole week and cook it. And if you spend your evenings cooking you won’t be out spending your $ elsewhere.
But the best thing is to focus on the goal even if it seems far away, just keep reminding yourself what you’re saving for. The cost of those work shoes will be a lovely centerpiece at the wedding and the cost of that haircut will be spent on making you look gorgeous on the wedding day.

You ladies are definitely on to something. Tighting my wallet is also keeping me healthy. I’ve drastically cut down on unnecessary purchases on snack foods and drinks and that is helping my budget and is keeping me at a healthy weight. Hang in there, I’m sure soon you won’t even miss it. Except the clothing shopping…I need a new pair of jeans so badly.
