YAY!!! I’m so excited! We severely underbudgeted for photography — not that we could have afforded to go higher anyway — but had not given up hope. Finally, combing Craigslist last night for a photojournalist (we love that style), I found someone in our area who is an experienced photog but has not done weddings.
She regularly does special events and the nightclub scene and is moving into wedding photography. She’s looking to expand her portfolio and is offering severly discounted rates for couples to help her do that. Love her flickr stream and her style.
And our conversation went great. She asked all the right questions neccessary to help build rapport. She also wants to do our engagement photos after we announce it. YAY.
I’m soooo happy right now. If anyone is looking on a budget, check out folks with a degree in photojournalism and looking to get into the genre. She’s charging us under $400 for both session!
And if there is anyone philly area that is last minute to the photographer party, she has availability in the next few months.

I don’t want to rain on your parade but I do want you to have realistic expectations of your photographer. Nightclub photography is nothing like wedding photography, and being skilled at one doesn’t make you capable of handling the other. The price is great (too great for your photographer to be insured, paying taxes on it, etc) so please just be aware as you go into this that you are taking a big risk hiring someone who has no wedding experience. I see a lot of bees come back to this board devastated because they had really high expectations from a photographer who seemed amazing at what they usually do (whether it be baby portraits, family, commercial photography, etc) but they botched the wedding. If you can go in with reasonable expectations knowing you haven’t hired a professional and things may go wrong you will come out of the experience hopefully pleasantly surprised and not totally devastated of something goes awry. Best of luck to you!
