Oh, I’m finding myself so very conflicted in the midst of this whole dress hunting experience, and I can’t seem to make a decision and stick to it!
I set myself a $500 budget for the dress and promptly fell in love with a $4000 dress. Decided to have a custom gown made and got quotes of around $2000. Wedding-brain says “Hey, $2000 is way less than $4000!” and fiance says “Go for it! You only get one!” (love him, bloody enabler though he is!) but I just don’t think I can do it. I keep thinking that’s a start towards a deposit on a home, a vacation for the two of us, those kitchen appliances I’ve loved for years – or a dress I’ll only wear for one day…
I haven’t really found any similar (but reasonably priced) dresses that I like, but there is this sweet dress at White House Black Market (who knew they had a wedding gown?) that comes in just under my original budget. It’s cute and retro and totally different from the flowy, swirly goodness of the Christos Desiree I so love. I kinda feel like if I buy a cheaper version of my dream dress, I’ll always be comparing it (unfavorably) to the real deal, but if I go for something quite different then I could be happy with it. Does that make any sense?
I’ve attached photos of my in Desiree ($4000) and the White House Black Market dress ($500). I keep looking at them and saying to myself “I do like Desiree more, but not 8x more!!” What do you think?
I know falling for a budget-breaking dress is nothing new in the wedding world… anyone want to commiserate? Start a club?
[ I just realized that when you click ‘upload,’ it submits the post! oops 🙂 sorry for the unfinished post! ]

I think Desiree looks goregous on you!

i love the christos, but these are totally different dresses! What kind of wedding are you planning?

They are both beautiful! but, I would pick the desiree because it is more wedding dress like. But both are fantastic

I love the desiree on you. It is a very traditional look. If that is the look your going for, I think you should get it.
The black market dress also looks good on you, but it is for a less formal wedding. If you are going for a less formal wedding, I think you should get that one.

I am also jumping on the desiree band wagon. That dress looks great on you.

I do love the Christos dress! Though I totally feel for you about the $4000!!! I was in exactly the same boat as you. My dress budget at first was $500- same as you! My dream dress ever (and still is) turned out being like $4000 (plus only sells in the UK). I had to keep looking and found my “IT” dress. I even got it for a steal brand new at the bridal store with a discount for $744. Wow, I actully just realized how close that is to my original budget. 🙂 And I LOVE my new dress!
I think you should keep looking. I know personally I would really regret paying $4000 for a dress even if it is my dream dress.
here is my dream (top) vs my “IT” (bottom) 🙂

I agree with franciebrady1. $4000 is wayyyyy wayyyy over your $500 budget. I had a $500 budget and ended up paying $700 for my dress but Mom paid the difference. I’d keep looking.

I love the Christos dress on you as well!
I know how you feel re: buying a “knock off” but if youre looking for an alternative, how about this from Davids Bridal — it’s just $750, and since there’s a DB everywhere you can try it on and see how you feel about it!

I’m in the boat that says $4000 is WAY over the $500 budget you set for yourself. There is a David’s Bridal dress that is VERY close to the Christos one, maybe head there any try it on and see if it has the same feeling that you’re looking for.

Keep looking! There is another dress out there that you will love as much as the Christos, but for a lot less. Don’t settle on a dress just because it’s your budget. No matter what it’s still your wedding day and you should wear something you really really like, even if you aren’t madly in love. You have several months before you need to make a decision and there are a lot of options out there. Try oncewed, preownedwedding dresses, bridalpower, bravobride, yourdreamdress, etc.

I was going to suggest going to DB, but one of the bees already suggested that! I tried that dress at DB on – it is a really nice looking dress!

@Wee_Spud: The Christos dress is very classic and beautiful but is waaaaay out of your budget. I would suggest to keep looking as well. There are many out there that look similar to your dream dress.
@franciebrady1: I prefer your IT dress to your DREAM dress so kudos on the find! 😀
