I think buffet style is better for a wedding, I agree it may not seem as elegant but in the end what people want is to fill up on good food. A plated meal limits how much they can eat as well as their options on what they would like to eat. Say they dont like salad, well then at a buffet they can fill their plate with meat and potatoes instead. With a plated meal their only option is to not eat whatever it is they don’t like but that may leave them feeling hungry and nobody wants that!

Definately family style.Keep in mind all the things that will be on the table when you do your centerpieces though.

ETA: I would pick anything over buffet. The food gets cold, and carrying the plate stinks, but I hate waiting in line the most. I have been to very few wedding where they were managed properly to get people through quickly. And I have been to a lot of buffet weddings and a few family style (ours was the first one I have ever gone to with a plated meal.)

Unless its a small party where my tablemates are close family and friends, I’d rather have buffet. I don’t mind walking to my table with food.

I voted family style because I can’t imagine grandma waiting in a buffet line, but I can imagine my drunk Aunt Kathy tripping over the flower girl and food flying everywhere.

I prefer buffet style but that’s because I have the idea people are more apt to behave badly with food on every table like it is when done family style.  I just think of someone double dipping or licking the spoon when it’s on the table family style.

I voted Family style.  It has happened to me more than once when I get up to the potatoes or whatever and I have to scrape the bottom of the pan and don’t want to hold the line up wait for fresh. 🙁  Also, I just feel like there less of a chance of me tripping with a full plate of food when I am served. 🙂

@graygodess20:  How many guests are you expecting?  If you’re having a large-ish wedding, see if the venue can set up two identical buffets, and have them accessible from both sides to avoid lines.  Also, you can see about designating someone specific to make a plate for Grandma and drunk aunt Kathy 😛

Or, you can have modest centerpieces and avoid the ‘clutter’ on the tables and do the family style dining where nobody has to get up.  Also, I’m sure the venue has someone checking the tables so if a particular dish is running low, they should be able to promtly refill it.

I voted buffet because it usually means more options for the guests and also means they can take as much as they want of the food they like. I hate plated meals, most of the time people are left hungry because they didn’t like the main. Family style is ok, but it’s pretty much just a plated meal without being plated for your guests, so less options.

We’re doing a buffet, even though that means our catering costs more then if we went with plated. Here buffets cost typically $5-$10 more per person then plated dinners, and then we don’t actually get a discounted meal price for the kids so it’s even more expensive there.

P.S. I guess buffet style is more common in my area because nobody complains about having to get up.  They do complain about how long it takes for their table to get called for their first trip to the buffet line though.

I much prefer buffet style. Waiting in line is not a problem. It gives people the opportunity to talk to others not at their table.

I like family style — no need to get up from your table and wait for other people in line.

    I prefer anything over buffet.

But that aside, I really love family style and that’s what we had at our wedding.  Everyone loved it.  Everyone got to eat exactly what they wanted without having to get up and go fetch their food like at a cafeteria.

Buffet – it makes people get up and mingle.  And I agree w/ PPs about the not enough food or the double dipping, ew.
