Buffet vs. Plated

I had a buffet. If the food is good, then it does not matter whether it is plated or buffet. I’ve only had shitty food that was plated at weddings so far… and the buffet weddings have had amazing food. For us, the guests have talked for months about how amazing the food was. If the cost is that drastic, save the money, especially if the caterer ‘s food is good to begin with.

I’m not fussed either way. Plated is a little nicer, but it isn’t a big deal to me.

Are you having a large wedding? Tbh I really dislike buffets in general, but for large weddings plated can also be tough to execute to a high degree. 3k is a lot, but imo food is one of the most important things at a reception.

I have been debating on this as well. I got sticker shock from the quote for a plated meal and I think I might have to compromise on a buffet if it means it will be cheaper and also stationed only appetizers for cocktail hour instead of passed.

My suggestions when I go to events with buffets is call the tables up one by one so there isn’t any line. That is what my church does at large events with buffets and it works.

natasha0b : I don’t care either way. From previous posts, I’ve heard some people complain that buffets are “gross” (not criticizing anyone but just repeating what I remember reading). Like I said, I have no preference as long as the food is good. Our venue who also does the catering actually charges $20 per person more for buffets so we are doing plated because it’s cheaper. The reason being they have to prepare extra food.

See if they can do family style as a good middle ground! They bring big platters of the food to each table, and guests serve themselves. It’s a little more intimate than buffet but not as formal as plated. That’s what we’re going with!

How formal is your wedding? I don’t love having to carry my own food around in a cocktail or formal dress and heels. I do hate waiting in line to collect my food. How do they handle guest management and do they have servers at the buffet or do guests serve themselves?

natasha0b :  We did buffet.  Less stress about having guests pick options.  People chose what they wanted.
