It doesn’t really matter to me as a guest.

For our wedding, we are going to do a plated salad and a buffet. That way as people finish their salad, they can just get up from their seats and go to the buffet.

I like sitdowns alot better, but mostly because I don’t have to stand and wait in a line, and have a bunch of people reaching in an breathing on the food that I am going to eat, and sitdowns are just fancier to me…  (not neurotic about the germs fyi)  ๐Ÿ˜€

I am having a sit down dinner, because I prefer it and I think it is more elegant. I have been to both types and I have enjoyed both for different reasons in the past. My brothers wedding was buffet-the food was awesome and hot, but I was also one of the first tables. I do worry that the later tables will have cold food and fewer choices. I also worry about the crowds and hassel of waititng in line. This is totally a personal opinion. I have been to plenty of very nice buffets, which as a positive allow you to take pick exactly what you want and how much you want. Do whatever makes you happy. It’s your day.

I prefer and am having a sitdown dinner.

Like PPs, I don’t like standing in line and “communal” food serving. That is just my opinion.

There are positives for both options but I think a sitdown is much more elegant and formal.

As for what guests think about- who cares? Do want you want to do and what’s best for your wedding. As long as they’re fed, guests will be fine.

I’m doing a buffet. I’ve only been to weddings with sit-down plated meals, but the buffet is $3.00 cheaper a head at my venue. So therefore, I’m only doing buffet because with 200 guests, it will save us quite a bit of money. We will have a child buffet, along with an adult buffet, and will dismiss people table by table so it’s not as crazy with everyone wanting food at once.

I do think the sit down dinner is more elegant. But I think I prefer buffet even though I hate the line. Because at the sit down receptions I have been to I didn’t care for everything on my plate and felt like it was a waste to the host, usually a buffet has a couple extra choices and you don’t have to take what you don’t want.  I think there are pros and cons for both.

I like buffet! More options, opportunity to get more of what you like and avoid what you don’t. I’ve left weddings starving before because I didn’t like the chicken meal they happened to provided, and then you are surviving on salad and a few vegetables. Do i think sit-down is fancier? Yeah, but I’d rather keep the guests happy!

We are having a buffet, but will be having our caterer serve so others don’t breathe on the food, lol. I can totally see where your concerns come from, ladies. One time I was @ a buffet & a kid stuck her fingers in one of the desserts to see what it was…SO gross! Anyway, a buffet was easier for us because of our reception site. I also figured it was more cost effective than hiring servers. I do worry about long lines, but that’s why the dj will be calling table by table.

We were going for a less formal affair, so that may play into your decision.

As a guest, I’m just glad someone is feeding me, LOL!

Like CaraMia10, I will also be having the caterers serve the buffet food, so people won’t be able to stick their fingers in the food or breathe all over it..

I’ve actually only been a guest at weddings with a buffet.  We’ve decided to do a sit-down dinner.  THere is just something more formal about it, and I hate the whole “which table gets to go next??” games.  However, I do appreciate that a buffet provides guests with a lot more selection.  At my venue a buffet was a lot more expensive than a 3 course seated meal, so it wasn’t a tough choice.

We’re having a buffet with upgrades such as a carving stations, cheese tables, sweets display, and ice cream ๐Ÿ™‚ Cost-wise it’s more than plated dinners since we are having quality and quantity!

I’m not worried about lines or the last guest getting cold food. A good venue will keep the dishes hot and a good coordinator will organize when tables get to go. People have to wait to be served too. Besides, I can get more mac and cheese!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I personally don’t get squeamish about germs at a buffet no more than germs from a plated dish. To each their own…

Theme-wise I would agree that a plated dinner has a more elegant feel. But that doesn’t mean that formal receptions can’t have buffets! My cousin’s wedding was the most gorgeous one I’ve been to and they had the tastiest dinner which was a buffet. It was yummy!!!
