I think plated dinners are for a more formal event, while buffets are more casual. Could you imagine 300 people trying to get to a buffet?
I think even if you have two buffet stations, for your large guest count you definitely will have people waiting in line for their food which never equals fun. The main reason why I would not choose a buffet is that not everyone eats at the same time. If you can avoid this, then I would go for more food 🙂 But for a formal reception, a seated dinner sounds better. Plated dinners are more expensive because you need to pay for the servers, etc.
Sorry I voted before reading. For 200-300 people go plated. Buffet would take aaaaages.
I like buffets myself, but if you want a real formal vibe the plated dinner would fit that better
Edit: PPs bring up a really good point, 300 ppl is way too many for a buffet.
Thanks for the help! The poll is still neck and neck, but we went with the plated dinner. It really just seems to fit better with the formal atmosphere. We’re looking into a stationary appetizer station with veggies, cheese and crackers, etc. A good compromise, I think. Thanks so much for everyone’s help!
I voted for hand-passed appetizers during the cocktail hour and a buffet dinner because that is what we are doing and our wedding is also very formal.
We came to the conclusion of buffet because it not only allows people to fill up on what they like (rather than starving and wasting things on their plates if they don’t like it) but also it encourages mingling which doesn’t often happen with larger weddings.
Plated! I always feel like I’m competing with the other guests for the food when there’s a buffet lol.
Edit: Whops, didn’t notice your update…long day+sleepy=poor reading skills lol
