Your neighbors really care what color your clothesline is?  It sounds like they don’t have much going on in their own lives if that’s all they got.

Don’t worry, I have neighbors that judge EVERYTHING we do. They also had Todd Akin signs in their front yard which invalidates literally everything that comes out of their mouths, IMO.

RedHeadKel:  For real. We moved into a neighborhood of old people though. Our entire cul-de-sac is all retired ppl with grandkids except for one couple that hasn’t ever so much as waived in our direction. I guess that’s a good thing? Rather them not care at all then watch our every move…

RedHeadKel:  If you allow them to talk about other neighbours in your presence, you are giving them permission to gossip. You can’t control what they do or say in your absence, but you can draw the line at gossip when they are talking with you.

Many people do care what the neighbours do in their yard, to the extent that many cities have banned clothesline outright, because of objections over the appearance. Unfortunately, many laws have been made simply because people can’t work out concerns amongst themselves.

RedHeadKel:  I guess it’s because everyone wants to be surrounded by perfection and if everyone does the expected (impossible because of different priorities/culture/upbringing) it makes people feel safer and ‘among the gossiper’s upbringing that is used to measure what you do and if you don’t live up to it you will be the talking point, but if you exceed it, likely nothing will be said.

RedHeadKel:  We’ve overheard our neighbors talking about us this year. Saying “must be nice to have money” and “he works in solar” etc. We put in a pool, put up a privacy fence and added to the landscaping so I guess we’re rich haha. Wonder what they’d say if they knew we converted our garage into a 4th bedroom?! Haters. 🙂

lady, I live next door to my in-laws!! Seriously though, they are very unobtrusive, don’t cross any boundaries and we hardly ever see them, but FIL can be a pain in the butt for sticking his head over the fence and providing a running commentary on everything we do.

“are we going to water our plants soon? Don’t you think we should have picked up that pebble that’s in the middle of the lawn,it will ruin your mower you know!shouldn’t we be cleaning the patio table soon, it sure looks mucky, can i have that piece of wood in your garden ,when are you going to sort out all that wood in your garden?”

And so on… It drives me batshit crazy, because I know that most of the time hes doing it to tease me. DH laughs it off, but I have to back into the house if I see FIL coming!
