My Fiance and I are in the process of this at the moment.

The biggest/most helpful piece of advice I have been given is that nothing will ever run on time, and I guess that is the biggest con of the whole process.

I did it on my own and at the time I said, “Never again”.

Now that Fiance and I are looking at land, I know it’s coming up again in the future. Our deal is that 1. we do it once and build our dream home and 2. if we’re tossing up between paint colours, tiles and such then he has to be the one to make the final decision. It’s too much stress for me. No thanks.

We are building right now – the house is set to be completed at the end of next month. At first the process was fun but now I’m over the whole thing and really just can’t wait to move in already.  It will be worth it in the end since we are building our dream house.

I do think that you should keep a few things in mind. A new construction home is going to be more expensive because you have to pay for things like window treatments and landscaping which would already be included in the price of a resale home. Also make sure to ask up front what kind of items are considered upgrades and how much the items you are interested in having will cost you. The price can increase from the base price very rapidly.

We are in the process of building right now.  It has been so much fun watching this house go up step by step.  We have been really lucky so far that we are under budget for the majority of the project and are looking to finish ahead or on schedule 🙂

I love the idea of picking everything out to suit your lifestyle and family needs. I would do it again if we get the chance.

Picking everything out was fun! The cost of upgrades was ridiculous tho!

Our house was finished on time but I’ve heard a lot of new builds have delays.

Things you don’t think of with a new home: towel racks and window treatments are not included and can get pricey! We don’t have grass and won’t for possibly up to a year. Nail pops in the walls from the house settling – it’s in our contract that they come back in a year to fix them (so I recommend not re-painting walls for at least a year after closing). The doors on one of our closets are rubbing together (difficult to close them) due to the house settling – we have to call the builder to see if they’ll come fix it.
