I would do it, but I would go to the police first and explain to them the situation, and why you want to do this… that way your Darling Husband doesnt call the cops and your brothers dont get arrested. I bet the station might even play along. lol

@imalittlebirdie: I don’t think a police station would “play along” with someone faking a burglary. For all they know, you’re just making sure they stay out of the picture while you do a real burglary.

I wouldn’t do it. Funny, but unnecessary and would probably just upset him.

Do you rent or own your home? If you own you could get a fancy new door handle. I have a door handle (was around $100, I think) that has a code you can put in to open & also opens with a key. It AUTOMATICALLY locks when you close the door. Darling Husband forgot to lock it a few times so we bought this for our peace of mind. A $100 lock was worth not having our house burglarized or animals hurt/missing if someone entered. I think I was more worried about our cats than our stuff because they’re inside only cats.

ETA- If the door is being left open, maybe you could get a screen door that automatically closes? Not sure if a regular door has this option, but our back screen door will automatically shut after its pushed open. Then at least you have 1 door closed.

Careful. Staging a burglary is illegal in some states… especially if the police do end up getting involved either by somebody seeing suspicious activity and calling the cops or Darling Husband calling the cops.

Darling Husband left the door open twice. The first time it happened, I called Darling Husband & said I think someone broke in, the door is wide open & asked him if I should call the cops. I stayed with him on the phone while I searched every room. I got so mad at him for how scared I was once he said he must have left the door open! The 2nd time this happened, I told Darling Husband I was concerned about our safety & if he kept leaving the door open there would be serious consequences & had a very good talk with Darling Husband. It didn’t happen again. I’m really forgiving & laid back, normally, but this I was very serious about!

What I would do if this happens again is call him before going in your home, make him stay with you on the phone while you search the house & if you yell or hang up or something he MUST call the cops. Tell him you don’t feel safe & just have a good, strict talk about it (not like putting him down but how it makes you feel unsafe, etc. Don’t feel bad about being strict on this… that’s what got it into DH’s head to close the door & lock it.

& our door lock, you just close the door, you don’t have to push lock or anything. You should look into that one :).

I would be REALLY careful doing this! I watched a wife tell the story of her husband doing this to her just for fun as a joke. Well he got shot!

buy a big heavy locking safe and put everything in it you would never want to get stolen. or ut it in a safe deposit box at the bank.  then forget about it.  i was married for 17 years to man exactly like yours and all the moaning, complaining and reminding i did fell on deaf ears.  sometimes i thought he was forgetting crap just to piss me off and maybe he was.  i would have been happier just keeping my mouth shut. chances are no one will break into your house. but put the valuables up just in case.

This is really stupid and could cause your brother or husband physical injury. Totally not worth it.

What about if you got a really big dog/puppy… it would be incentive to keep the door closed… and  protection?
