Yesterday I had my first fitting and the seamstress said I needed to bustle the train of the gown. She said it makes it easier to walk around, dance, etc. I had no clue a gown needed a bustle. Is it extremely necessary? And to be honest, I LOVE my train and never thought I ever wanted it bustled up, but is this practical? Our wedding is very small – 20 people and no dancing really – is a bustle completely necessary?
And finally – what kind of bustle do people get? Over, under, french, etc? Would love to know your thoughts and pictures please.

Oh yes, I would definitely do a bustle. I had a small train and I still did one because even for sitting down it’s much easier to manage the dress. I’m not sure what mine was called, but it had 5 little loops the hooked onto hooks by my butt. I pretty much had it bustled the whole day except for the ceremony.

A bustle is not absolutely necessary; however, if you want to keep the bottom of your gown from being stepped on and also from getting extremely dirty, I highly suggest getting one for your gown. In your case; depending on the length and weight of your train, you might be able to get away with a wrist strap instead.
I have a six-point French bustle in my gown. Here is a picture of the train on the model and a picture of me with it bustled.
