Having an SO that has worked at Best Buy and Sears electronics, he always says “Panasonic is the BEST for plasma, but Sony and Samsung are also good” and “Sony or Samsung if it is an LCD TV”. We have a 50″ Samsung Plasma TV and LOVE IT. Burn in is not a big deal, just don’t leave it on the same screen for a super long time, and even if you do, it goes away easily. Like sportsgal, we love watching movies on our Plasma and they show black better than most TV’s. They are heavier and use more energy, though.

Another thing to consider is the lighting in the room. LCD’s do better in bright rooms because they have a matte screen, whereas Plasmas have a glass screen that can cause glare in brightly lit rooms.

That’s my 2 cents! He also reccomends just going in store to see what you think looks better, a lot of people that write reviews about the TV they own haven’t seen it compared to other TVs. And he says that the technology for 3D tv’s is just not up to par yet to justify the price, it is still in infant stages.

Can you tell he’s an electronics freak, yet? It’s rubbing off, apparently!! Hope that helps!!

Like others, I would caution against the 3D TVs. Comparing a mediocre 3D theatre that I worked in for years and the 3D glasses I was horrified. THe glasses alternate between lenses which I found didn’t really give the 3D effect, just gives a headache. FH who doesn’t have near the same about of 3D experience didn’t get the 3D effect either.

Plasma, I think, is really only good if you can get a room really dark, other wise a form of LCD is better. We got an LED as the afternoon sun comes right into the room and it works great. Now I’m just spoiled with HD :/
