I’m having a problem deciding what to buy. We can’t afford my ideal platinum 0.75 carat anniversary band, so it looks like I will have to either go for a lower clarity of diamonds in order for a bigger size and get it set in white gold instead of platinum.
There is one ring on ebay (seller has 100% feedback) that is slightly smaller than what I want (0.5 carats) but it is set in platinum. The only downside is that it’s pre-owned and I have to get it sized down.
What would you do?
1) Buy a brand new ring. 14k white gold, I1 diamonds, total carat weight 0.75 carats.

OR
2) for $200 more This pre-owned ring set in PLATINUM with VS diamonds, total carat weight 0.5.

I’d get the preowned ring, quality trumps quantity.

Go preowned. I’m getting an antique ring, and I would never be able to get a platinum ring (WITHOUT DIAMONDS EVEN!) for the same price! The new ring has I1 diamonds, that I really wouldn’t suggest, and this way you’ll get platinum that’ll go with your e-ring (I’m assuming). Sizing down shouldn’t cost much more. And personally, just looking at the two pics, if I didn’t know the second one was pre-owned, I like it more than the first, specs and cost aside.

Agree. You don’t want platinum brushing up against a softer metal like white gold. Not good for the gold. Get something equally as durable so it holds up.

I would only EVER buy preowned, it really is the best possible savings anybody could ever get in purchasing an e-ring, especially if you buy direct without the middle man markup!

can you post the stats of you e-ring? 14k or Platinum? what is the quality of your diamond cause if you get the VS and you dont have that in your e-ring the band will sparkle like mad and the diamond wont so much

@GelaMac: clarity doesn’t affect sparkle unless you have a pretty crappy diamond with really bad inclusions (even if the diamond was an I1, it would depend on the type of inclusion within the stone to say it will affect its sparkle)…cut is the most important factor to a stone’s sparkle.

@Dell79: i have seen some stones that the only diff was their clarity and the sparkle was def different…

@GelaMac: right, it depends on the type of inclusion- the stone you saw probably had a ton of cloud inclusions. Cut is the major determination in a stone’s fire and brilliance. Google it!

@Dell79: I dont need to google it I know that the cut is the most important but the reason that I asked the OP what her other specs were is that it
can be a factor. The comparisons I saw were from VS to I1 and exactly the same cut and colour and there was a noticable differences in some of the stones

@GelaMac: I am not looking to argue with you. You stated:
“if you get the VS and you dont have that in your e-ring the band will sparkle like mad and the diamond wont so much”
This is a false statement. When selecting a stone, clarity relating to sparkle is entirely incusion-specific. Enddddddd of story! or agree to disagree?

Anyway, sorry for the threadjack OP!

I’d go with the first option, new. Not because I want more carat weight, it’s because I’m not comfortable wearing pre-own ring when I don’t history and the owner of the ring. I won’t mind pass on rings from my family or relatives.

My ering is currently 14k white gold (down the road i want to get platinum though) and it is SI clarity.
ps. no worries about the threadjack! i want to know all your thoughts.
@Gelamac – do you think a VS anniversary band would upstage my SI solitaire?
