Former Nordstrom employee here. I would recommend getting the debit card option. No credit check required. They will need your checking and routing numbers and ID to set it up for you. I will link directly to whichever account you choose, so make sure you have the funds you need available to purchase your dress on the same day you get the card. If you spend $100+ on the same day you open the card, you will get a bonus $20 Nordstrom Note. You should also make that day your Triple Points Day for the year, so you will be getting 6 points/dollar instead of the normal 2 points/dollar.
The reasons I always suggested the debit card over the credit card at Nordstrom were that it was much easier to qualify for, there was no interest rate (which can be high with retail CC), and it had a lot of the same benefits as the CC. If you are wanting to build your credit, I would choose to open a more traditional CC as retail CC don’t look as great on a credit report. Also, the Nordstrom CC is a fairly hard card to qualify for. They won’t give it to you if you don’t have a decent credit history.
Make sure you open your Nordstrom Debit with the same employee who is selling you your dress. She gets a reward and the credit for opening the card, and Nordstrom is really big on that.
I have the Nordy debit card and the rewards are so worth it! If you’re buying a dress from them, it’s worth getting the cc or debit card
You guys are amazing! I feel a lot better about doing either the credit card or debit card option, although I am definitely leaning more towards the debit card. And for those of you pointing out I should be using credit more, you are very correct. I just graduated from medical school and now that I’m finally making money instead of paying tuition, one of my goals is to work on my financial situation, including credit. Sigh. Being an adult is hard! 🙂
Thanks again Bees! This community is so helpful and I’m excited to have found it!
Personally I have 2 store credit cards: Target and Kohl’s. Both have saved me an insane amount of money because I am smart about my spending and I always pay it off at the end of the month. I save 5% at Target every time I use my card, which when you end up going there for groceries and/or household supplies, it adds up quickly. I also use the Cartwheel app by scanning every product I put in my cart to see if there is a coupon for that product or if there is a coupon on a similar product to save me more money. I’m a Target fiend haha. Plus Kohl’s sends you an INSANE amount of coupons so it totally saves me money on stuff I would buy anyway.
If you are going to use the card again after your wedding, I would get it. If not, then I don’t think it’s necessarily worth it.
We are putting all of our wedding purchases on a credit card.
I have a Nordstrom debit card, as I didn’t want any more credit inquiries because we’d just bought a house when I got it. I have received several Nordstrom notes which has been great. But, I will say there are other major credit cards out there that have more universal reward systems. Discover for example, has cash back rewards for Nordstrom purchases. So, no you wouldn’t get the free alterations, but the cash back you earn from putting your dress on the card could earn you enough to pay for the alterations. And then when you pay for the alterations, you can do that with your Discover card too which would earn you more points again. And with Discover, you can use the points as cash back, statement credit, or apply them towards purchases with certain companies such as Amazon.com. So, that way you’re not confined to only using the rewards at one store, which is typically the case with store credit cards.
If you get it, pay it off right away and use it like a debit carD! You will also get early access to their SALE which is amazing and may save you on shoes, accessories etc.
Another Nordstrom bride, and dress twin in fact! I plan on opening a Nordstrom CC to purchase my gown as well. Going next Friday with my mother who has yet to see it in person 🙂
Wow, that dress is pretty!
I put all my purchases on a credit card and pay it off each month. My credit is great because of that, plus I get the rewards that most debit cards don’t provide. It seems like the Nordstrom debit card is better than most other debit cards.
