@AB Bride:  I think I have one friend in Canada, but I’m not much of a facebooker. That’s weird that they’re phasing them out. My parents are penny hoarders so maybe if they phase them out in the US, someone will pay them big bucks for them. Yeah right, but that would be awesome.

I live in Canada and this is my first time reading that we are this close to actually doing it! When I worked at a Starbucks two years ago, a couple customers kept telling me pennies were going to be gone any day and would yell at me whenever I tried to give them some for change. :/

Even though they’re stopping production, they have said they will always be accepted as long as people hold on to them.  So I’m not really sure they’ll go up in value or anything unfortunately 🙁

I’m glad though…they never do anything for me except weigh down my wallet!!

Australia did away with pennies a long time ago and it’s great!   They just round everything to the nearest five cents and it all seems to balance out in the end.   Despite not having pennies, my wallet doesn’t seem to be any lighter though…..

Good on Canada for following suit – I imagine the US won’t be too far behind as this has been batted around for a while now.

Wow! I didn’t know that they were finally going to do this! I feel like I’ve been hearing about them going away for years now. YAY!

I know they’ve been sort of talking about doing this in the states too, since our penny costs more to make than it’s worth. lol

@zippylef:  I feel they’ve been talking about it forever here…

Canada’s actually doing it though… I wonder if that will encourage the U.S. to do the same?

I feel like the penny thing is just a diversion from all the crappy stuff in the budget. I can’t believe they cut Katimavik. 🙁

I’m pretty excited that the penny is going away, though. I’m someone who rarely uses cash and I hate pennies the most!
