I’m from San Diego and I love it! I would recommend staying in either La Jolla or Downtown. if you like hiking, Torrey Pines has some of the most beautiful sea side cliffs for hiking. Downtown has am amazing nightlife and great restaurants. You could look into the Paradise POint Resort, which is close to Mission Bay, but much more secluded and romantic. I’m not sure of any hotel recommendations for La Jolla. For downtown, there are so many you cant really go wrong. The new Hilton Downtown is gorgeous! Let me know if you need other recommendations.

I also love Yosemite, so it really depends on what kind of vacation you want. Yosemite would be a much different feel than San Diego

When you say last minute does that mean this coming weekend or in the very near future? It will def be MUCH colder this time of year in big sur than San Diego. Yosmite will be freezing right now. If you really like the outdoors I’d do SD this time of year and go to Big Sur or Yosimite in the summer when it is warm.  I love downtown SD, Mission Bay, Coronado, pretty much anywhere you can’t go wrong.  Never spent too much time in La Jolla. Not sure your budget what downtown hotels I love that are budget friendly is the Double tree on Front street. As for as high up and bay facing as the rooms go. You will get an incredible city view with a balcony and see the water as well. You will be walking distance to little Italy and close to downtown.

@Mrs. Wallaby:  I love Little Italy! The restaurants there are all amazing so you really can’t go wrong. In La Jolla, I love the Karl Strauss Brewery, but there are also moms more upscale places too.

@Mrs. Wallaby:  I lived in La Jolla for about 6 years… I’d definitely recommend La Jolla/San Diego. Big Sur is absolutely gorgeous but you won’t find much “city life” along Big Sur area. Hope that helps!

I’ve always gotten really lucky booking hotels in SD using Priceline. I’d recommend staying anywhere in Gaslamp or La Jolla. “Hotel Circle” is a little “meh…..”

Shopping is really good; so is kayaking and some minor snorkeling. Boogieboarding/surfing is also a popular option. You can definitely soak up the sun down at the Hotel Coronado… drive past it on the main road and turn right just before the high rise condos and look for a parking spot on that street.

Food wise, check out Extraordinary Desserts, Sushi Ota, The Cottage!
