It’s so true! When I went to church we used to call people like that Christmas/Easter Christians. They were the people that were suddenly active church members when their family was in town and would only want to volunteer at major holidays, and they were almost always the most conservative members. I didn’t mind because it was the only Sundays we were allowed to take off as a family because we would actually get enough volunteers for once. 🙂

if you want a fun summer read that’s related The Year of Living Biblically is great. The author attempts to follow every rule in the bible for a year. It’s quite funny and points out all of the stuff people ignore, from mixing fibers to stoning adulterers.

@missjewels: Wanna hear something awesome?  I’m joining a Methodist church in Little Rock, ARKANSAS that welcomes all types of people, family structures, and is open about their acceptance of alternative lifestyles.  The pastor wears a rainbow signifier around his neck.  I feel so blessed that my Christianity isn’t dominated by hate-filled homophobia.  I’m so proud to be a member of the congregation, and I’m so proud of my community.  BTW- Both my pastors are heterosexual, and I am heterosexual.  If something this awesome can happen in ARKANSAS, then maybe we are progressing after a country, after all.

@nerdysarah: That’s amazing! The minister from the United church I went to growing up runs a group for LGBT youth 🙂 If we weren’t planning on getting married in Florida I’d definitely be asking him to perform the ceremony!
