I havent’ started trying yet, but I did ask my gyno, and he suggested you really won’t do any damage with things like alcohol and caffine until you are far along enough in your pregnancy to test….

I’m drinking 1 cup a day. Whenever we manage to get pg, I’m still planning on drinking my one cup of coffee a day.

Before TTC I was 1 cup a day and a cup of espresso/cafe americano in the afternoons. Once I started TTC I weaned myself down to 1/2 a cup of coffee each morning and that’s it. And during TWW I drank no caffeine, alcohol, etc. I acted like I was pregnant.

Do whatever you are comfortable with within doctor’s guidelines!

I’m pregnant and still drinking caffineated iced tea. And eating chocolate because I am not giving up chocolate. So, basically, it’s really just what you are comfortable with. A lot of people do not give up their cup of coffee a day throughout pregnancy. It just depends on how you feel about it.

My doctor told me to reduce my caffeine and alcohol intake while trying, but she didn’t say I need to cut it completely. I decided no alcohol , a cup of coffee in the morning, but no caffeinated sodas or teas during TWW.

I think its a personal thing. I avoided caffeine even before I was pregnant and when I wasnt TTC.. it was just a part of my healthy lifestyle choices,  I think the body is healthier without caffeine whether you’re pregnant or not.

According to the books I’ve read, it’s OK to consume up to 200mg of caffeine while you’re pregnant (which I believe is about 2 cups of coffee a day, depending on your cup size of course!) I also read somewhere (either here or in one of the books on preparing to conceive) that if you are a regular coffee drinker, you may not want to eliminate it completely because it could affect your blood pressure.  I’m happy to know this because I adore my daily coffee.  I haven’t had an official 2ww yet, but during those gaps, I try and limit myself to two cups and have started trying to drink more decaf.

I’m newly KU (today is the last day of my TWW)!  I abstained from alcohol during TCC and my TWW but I continue to have my 1 cup of morning coffee.  I plan to wean myself off caffeine though (now that I’ve gotten my BFP)!  Wink

I think it’s smart to cut down, but not necessary to avoid it completely.  When you get PG you need to have less than 200mg and if you have more than that now, it can be very stressful to cut down then.  It’s a shock to your system to cut it out cold turkey.  So slowly wean yourself and deal with the withdrawals now…

@redqueen: I think it’s totally personal choice. In the beginning I treated my body as if I was pregnant. However, after a 6 months of TTC without success I started doing whatever I wanted, for sake of my own sanity. Pretending I was pregnant started to weigh on me. Now that I’m pregnant the smell of coffee makes me want to puke so it was easy to give up lol.

I started cutting back before we started TTCing because I used to have 4-6 cups a day. Now I stick to one cup of coffee in the morning and if I’m really dragging I’ll let myself have another or a diet coke in the afternoon. I guess I’m really following the 200 mg thing.
