Cake and coffee reception then dinner?

Yes, that’s rude. Just keep your reception as you can afford. there’s nothing wrong with that. Actually appetizers, cake and coffee sound lovely. I would like to attend one in the future myself. CowboyBootsAndGlitter :

Most of the after-parties I’ve been to (post-reception), guests pay for their own drinks. But that’s after being hosted for dinner and drinks and dancing by the bride and groom/their families. Maybe the couple would pay for a round but not necessarily. 

Is there something in between Taco Bell and the fancier dinner you imagine that would be an option, if you really want to also have them join you for dinner? What about having BBQ or a deli cater something? We had our welcome dinner catered by a local BBQ joint and it was quite reasonable. We also stocked the bar with stuff from Total Wine.
