I dont think it would be awful…to me that’s kind of the point of a cake buffet…people can choose what they want.

We had a cake buffet at our wedding!  We had 6 cakes and 6 pies for 100 people (we ended up having 1 full pie, 1 part of pie and a few small parts of cakes left).  Everyone served themselves and it was a HUGE HIT.  People loved that they could pick which ones and how much they ate.  Just make sure you have enough knives and lifters for each flavour.

@badgerbee:  Hmmm, I’m not sure!  How tall are your cakes?  Have you found plastic lifters that are pretty substantial and could lift your cakes?  I’m all about go with what works for you, and if you’ve found some that are strong enough go with that.  We had a backyard wedding and already had a rental company, so we just rented a bunch (they were like $1 each).  Are you using a rental company for anything?  That’s always an option rather than buying!  Also, don’t forget your cakes will probably need something to sit on, so make sure you have cake stands or plates.  We rented those also.
