Unfortunately that sounds about typical, $300-$600 range. I think mine ended up costing $300 but I had a small 2 tiered cake and a few dozen cupcakes

My baker has been amazing to work with, and for a 3 tier (65 guests) we’ve been priced for $350.  She’s even going to color match the ribbon I’m using in my bouquet for one of the layers.

$300 sounds quite reasonable for 40 guests and buttercream cake. $500, not so much unless you’re getting intricate detail work.

The local bakers I connected with often stated “$100 per tier”. We are having a three tiered cake for $300. Your quote sounds reasonable. 🙂

(To clarify: The cost also depends on the amount of detail.)

My 3-teir cake for 40 guests is $350. We also chose buttercream, with 3 different cake flavors.

It depends how elaborate the design is. Usually, bakers charge per slice. In my area, the cheapest one I’ve seen is about $4 per slice for a simple butercream to about $9 per slice for a fancier designed fondant.

ETA: Our venue is all inclusive including the cake so I don’t really know how much it costs. Our venue has a contract with 3 of the most popular bakeries in my city. We are supposed to choose one and tell them which one we want. It covers a 3 tier white buttercream cake with 2 flavors only. If you want fondant, a more complicated design, a 3rd flavor, etc. then those would be extra.

penny1403 :  That sounds very reasonable! Our cake was a 4 tier gourmet cake for $750 and it fed about 150-175 people.
