You have the same thoughts as we did, we strongly dislike heavy and overly sweet cakes. We opted for a vanilla rum cake with vanilla buttercream filling. It is not heavy or too sweet, in fact my fiance sat and ate most of the 6″ sample cake without a thought. It was the perfect combination of lightness and flavor.

Fruit cakes are great but sometimes when bakes ahead of time the fruit changes color and texture when sitting over night. I’m not a fan of squishy, brownish fruit so we opted against that.
