This type of question is only able to be answered on your local board because it depends mainly on where you are located (larger cities charge more than small communities). Even then, there are so many factors involved that there is no simple cut and dry answer. The baker may charge extra if you want cupcakes instead of regular cake because they are more labor intensive. There may be an extra charge for certain flavors or fillings. Fondant (which is used just for looks and goes straight into the trash rather than being eaten) is expensive because it is labor intensive, whereas other icing options are not. You also have to factor in any delivery charges.

I am getting married in the NY/NJ area so it is a rather more expensive area.  The venue we booked at actually included a cake in the price.  The cake we were able to pick out was about a $200-$300 cake for 100 people. We wound up actually falling in love with a different cake that was perfect for our theme and it was an extra $400 because the new cake had sculpted sugar flowers and a lot of detailing.

It really all depends on what you want.  Did I need the fancier cake?  No of course not, but it was something my fiance and I got really excited about, so we treated ourselves.

In most areas, I think you can get a fairly basic cake for between $200 and $400 for 100-150 people.  You can always get a super simple cake and buy extra flowers from your florist to decorate it!
