That does indeed sound like a lot for a wedding cake…Do you have a boutique super market – you know one a step up from Safeway, maybe they can make you a great cake for a reasonable price?

EDIT = a step up from Ralphs or Vons!?!?!?

Our cake is $3.50/slice plus the delivery fee. Since we have a small guest list that is feasible for us. I’ve heard of lots of people getting a small wedding cake thats displayed and used for the cake cutting adn then having a sheet cake in the kitchen that is served to the guests.

I know that Edelweiss has great prices. I think a 3 tiered cake is $250. We tried the cake there, it was traditional but good!

Have you looked into Briar Mist in Oceanside? I’m not sure what their base rates are because my cake was included in my package, but the upgrades I got were really inexpensive!

There’s also this place in San Elijo: http://www.cakesbyallison.com/information.html … they start @ $3.50 … but then if you have to pay a cutting fee it still adds up :/ [BTW, how annoying are cutting fees?]

I don’t know where San Marcos is, but maybe you can buy one in Tijuana, as the peso is cheaper than the dollar, you could save some bucks.

Try Sumi’s Oven. That’s who we’re using and she’s definitely in your budget.

Try Flour & Flower – based in San Clemente but she’ll deliver to SD area.  A lovely woman, Davlyn, who bakes out of her own home and has very reasonable prices.  She was telling me about a recent bride who wanted the Cheesecake Factory’s Red Velvet cake as cupcakes for favors – and she was able to recreate the recipe perfectly.  People were apparently almost stealing the favors from other guests who left them unattended!  We’re using her for our cake in July.

Order your cake without using the words “wedding” or “reception”.  As soon as a baker hears those words, your cost has just doubled or tripled.  Just order based on how many guests you will be serving.  Go in with your numbers in hand, for example-A 14 in round, 12 inch round or 1/2 sheet cake.  Use their terminology of cake and your design ideas and you will find yourself saving quite a bit of money.  Money mouth

@Sulli, we don’t have Publix in San Diego!
