I really think this idea is great, and will save a lot of money over big flower arrangements!

If you’re really worried about people eating the cake/cupcakes too early, you can always print cute little signs and frame them saying something like, "Share a bit of sweetness with us when we cut our cake!", or something like that indicating that they should wait until you cut the cake or whenever you want them to start eating it.

I like ynichole’s idea of letting them take a cupcake home as a favor.  Dual purpose centerpieces!

i love this idea!

i remember early in my planning i thought about getting edible arrangements for my tables and this totally reminded me of that. here i’ve been stressing about buying candles. my reception is going to be a cocktail party with couches, coffee tables, bar tables and stools…i think i need to talk to my venue about what kind of food based centerpiece they can come up with. so glad i saw this post.

I think it’s such a cute idea! I would totally do it if I hadn’t already bought like 1 million christmas bulbs to make my own centrepieces 🙂

I think it would look really good if you did a cake on each table or if you did a display of cupcakes. If you went with the cupcake option you could have twice as many cupcakes are you require and then get some little chinese take-out boxes and let people each take a cupcake home as a favor (make sure you have 2 per person so they can eat one at the wedding!!) I love idea that work as decorations and favors!

I think it’s a great idea! My DOC actually did this at her wedding. Not only did she and her husband have cakes as centerpieces, but they also went around to each table to cut & serve everyone’s cake! She also had embroidered aprons for her and her husband to wear while serving their guests. It was adorable! She has lots of adorable pics of the centerpieces/cake cutting/personalized aprons on her bio – she is knottie MrsPinkAJV. Hope this helps!

We did cakes as centerpieces, which helped save a bunch of money. It also helped encourage mingling, since we didn’t have assigned seats and everyone rotated around to check out the different cakes. For favors, we had to-go boxes for the cake, with indiv. servings of coffee and tea, so the guests could enjoy a late night treat on us.

We also did small cakes as centerpieces, and it was really fun!  Our guests absolutely loved them.  I remember one thing that my mom loved about it was that we got extra cake boxes from our baker and had the guests take home the extra cakes, so we didn’t have anything left over.

Man Now I’m considering doing this too. Flower centerpieces are so expensive! Plus nothing will go to waste. Did you or will you guys get mini cakes or just individual 6inch cakes for each table?

Cakes are super cute for centerpieces – but beware because they can be quite expensive. My cousin and another friend of mine both paid about $50 per cake (which can add up quick if you have a lot of tables!). Also, the weddings I’ve been to – no one hardly touched them. It was really a shame for all the money. I’d definitely suggest cupcakes though … that would be different – especially if you could do them tiered to give the centerpiece some height.

I’m using cakes as centerpieces too.  Instead of cake stands, I’m using square vases with flowers inside and a piece of round plexi for the top.

I’m ordering my cakes from extraordinary desserts and they come pre-decorated.  They’ll all be different, but I like that idea.

I’m going to use cupcakes as centerpiece.  They’ll probably be arranged on glass cake platter with glass dome and decoration will be sage ribbon tied to the dome knob with sage ribbon streamers hanging down with rosebuds attached.  And then the cupcakes will have single rosebud on them and then flower petals and votives around the cake platter.

We picked up a bunch of cake platters on sale and hopefully the dome will discourage people from taking any before the cake is cut.

I did this for my wedding in May and it was a huge hit! I did cupcakes which I purchased lace cups for. I also made the cake plates. I collected china plates and used glass candle stick holders. I also added a glass cabinet door knob to the top to finish it off.

It took a little time to pull them all together but everyone loved them.
