Hi! My husband and I are trying to plan our first anniversary trip to California this June. We have friends/family in LA, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco and would like to fly into LAX and drive up to San Fran. We would like to spend a few days on our own between Santa Barbara and San Fran and are planning on renting a car to drive up. Any suggestions for places to stay/things to do? I’ve never been there before and would love any input!

definitely drive up highway 1 from santa barbara! it’s beautiful. carmel is a cool place to stay as it’s quaint and romantic but there’s not much to do there other than eat and shop. monterey has an awesome aquarium if you’re into that kind of thing (i love it but i know not everyone does). i think there are wineries near san luis obispo if you like wine tasting. really the best part is the scenery on the drive. there are lots of places to pull over on highway 1 so you can take pictures.
i live in the bay area so if you need any info on places to stay or stuff to do up here, let me know. you said you guys have family/friends here so i figured you already had that stuff taken care of so i didn’t list anything for this area.

Yep I’m from San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles! It’s wine country! Definitely worth a stop…esp if you’ve seen the movie Sideways 🙂
I don’t know of the best places to stop…I lived in CA most of my life. But I don’t think I really did any amazing trips. I personally love a drive out to Santa Cruz…and going to the boardwalk. It’s really one of my favorite places (maybe a little childish). And Berkely is a fun stop.
In San Francisco you’ll want to do the piers, Ghiradelli Square, maybe a trip out to Alcatraz Island, and my personal fav is China Town.

Hi! How exciting. I live in San Diego and travelled north to Paso Robles quitr a bit. Mostly to see friends that live there but also for some fun wine tasting! travelling on 101 N. (Out of Santa Barbara, another favorite place of mine) there is a small town called Solvang. It is a danish community. Its kind of neat to walk through. Keep travelling N on 101 you can stop in Paso Robles. Alot of wineries to choose from. I would stay a night or two. You can look up winery tours (hire a company to take you to all the wineries so you can relax and have fun with your man. A few: hoponthewineline.com, the winewrangler.com, uncorkedwinetours.net) also look into hearst castle (about an hour west of Paso Robles) north of Paso, you have santa cruz, montery, morro bay (is supposed to be real nice and is within that area).
whatever you plan, i’m sure you will have a blast! Wishing you a fun sunny Californian adventure!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! We’ll definitely have to go to some wineries. I’ll probably check back in as we’re planning and ask more questions. But you’ve given me a lot to browse! Any hotel/B&B suggestions?
