I planned a homebirth with a midwife.

  • $3400 to my MW for my prenatal, birth, & postnatal care cost
  • $250 in labwork
  • $200 for 2 u/s one being a 4-d
  • $50 for Homebirth kit
  • $300 for my birthpool & setup supplies.

I believe a hospital birth cost around ~10k for a natural uncomplicated vaginal birth and I have no clue what the prenatal obgyn costs are… I do know when I was pregnant with my first they wanted $2500 upfront at my first visit (I was very young & ended up on Medicaid).

We literally just received our bills from having our LO 3/13.
Dr. Appts-1200
Bloodwork and Ultrasounds-no clue, they are separate cost from dr. appts.
Labor/anesthesia/hospital stay-2400 (vaginal delivery no complications)
Various Tests for Me and Baby while in hospital-350
Baby Supplies-no clue! We received a lot of what we needed as gifts.  We slowly bought things over time such as diapers and wipes.  THe first week home we had to buy things.  If you breastfeed you will cut costs since you don’t have to purchase formula. The same thing goes with cloth and disposable diapers.

I would say in total minus supplies (b/c that can really vary depending on how and what you buy) it was about 5000 with being covered by insurance. Insurance was a 1500 deductible and 5000 out of pocket.  I can tell you that the insurance was billed 16,000 for my 2 night hospital stay for all things that involved popping this baby out and we are responsible for 2400.

I hope this helps!

It was $12k for the hospital birth (vaginal, pitocin and epidural) and 2-night stay, and $3k for my ob/gyn to deliver. All my prenatal visits were covered by my mom’s insurance because I was a student. For whatever reason, they dropped me right before I went into labor so I got stuck with the actual hospital and delivery costs. Baby girl also had a phototherapy panel due to low bilirubin levels so that was another couple hundred I think. And a home nurse had to come every day for the first week to test her bilirubin so they could determine when her levels were back to normal. I think that was $40 per visit. Lots of gifts helped offset clothing, bottles, pillows, bedding, etc. but I’d say we spent another $500 on car seats, strollers, and a pack’n’play. So around $16k out of pocket.

@candy11: lol yes! Actually the wedding is cheaper, our budget is $15k. Before I got pregnant, I was just a dumb college kid and had no real clue why health insurance is so important. Now that I’ve had to deal with the financial burden of having a baby without insurance, I can say with certainty that I will definitely have insurance – or a GIGANTIC savings account – before I decide to have another child.

@candy11:  my insurance apparently didnt cover ANY prenatal care and I was living in CA at the time. There, no matter what your income, you qualify for Medicaid for your pregnancy so I ended up not having to pay anything.

Anyone have info about costs of having a baby in Canada? (Specifically Ontario).  Are these things covered by OHIP?

@mrsbruff2b:  everything is covered by OHIP unless you want to upgrade your room. Taxes pay for your hospital stay and care in the hospital.

All my costs+baby’s costs were $17,500. Vaginal birth, epidural, and pitocin. 2 night stay.

We had double insurance (actually, baby had triple initially), so we didn’t pay anything out of pocket.
