So what is your specialty? How do you like it? So in a few days I will have officially worked my first year as a nurse, a med-surg telemetry nurse working 12 hour nights (can’t you tell, it is 4 am and I can’t sleep!!). I worked on this floor prior as an extern for almost 2 years so I kind of knew how the floor flowed and what not which was helpful. Our floor receives mostly geriatric patients, but also many bariatric and psychiatric patients as well. I am interested in moving to day shift, but it is waaaaay too crazy on days on this floor and I don’t think I could handle it without going crazy!! I don’t really think I can keep doing med-surg tele for the rest of my career.
I have always been interested in surgery, even as a kid I liked to watch surgeries (I was strange kid, haha) and I liked my surgical rotation in clinical, but of course though that was just a clinical where I got to just watch a surgery. I’m thinking about trying to go to either the OR or the PACU after my wedding. Anyone work in those areas? Any advice? 🙂

@Duckie731: I work in Peds and I love it. Prior to working in Peds, I worked Oral/Maxillofacial Surg, floated Gen Surg and had a brief stint in CV Surg (but I couldn’t get enough hours, so I left). I know what you mean about day shifts being so hectic … I didn’t see myself long-term in those areas prior to finding Peds. Now I love going to work, regardless of the shift.
What did you decide to do? Did you make a change? Everyone I know in OR/PACU/Day Surg absolutely loves it!

Until a month ago, I was day shift float pool for med-surg. On any given day, I floated to:
-gen surg/ENT surg/specialty surg
aaand occasionally the psych holding pod in the ED.
It was a great experience for, well, the experience, but it was also crazy hectic! Also, bc I worked 12h days, but many of the med-surg units have a mix of 8 and 12h workers, I would sometimes have to float out to a different unit at 1500…and by sometimes, I mean maybe 1/3 of the time. Super hard!
A month ago, though, I was finally able to make my transition into peds!!! <3 it and am so happy to be where I am. I’m on nights instead of days, but am starting to get used to the new sleep schedule.
Good luck with the OR, if that’s where you go next! I hope you end up loving whatever you do 🙂

Ugh, yeah, I hated split shifts. They were SUCH a pain! That’s the best part about not floating anymore, hands down!
