We’re on the hunt for a moving company that can handle us in late January for a reasonable rate and that will do a good job to boot. Already had one lead fall through as that company went ouf of business. it seems they are still moving people on the side, but I guess I’m worried about issues arising if they’re not legit. Am curious about the expected rates out there. We live in a 1 bedroom with den unit up several flights of stairs (3rd story). No insanely heavy items like a piano or anything though we do have a big parrot cage for our bird. The move will be under 15 miles away, and to cut costs we might ask them to leave nearly everything in our oversized garage. I’m hoping that our off-season move date will buffer the cost somewhat too, and was thinking of maybe like $200 plus gratuity. All leads/recs greatly appreciated!

Beltway movers, they cover the DC Metro area.
We used them and will use them again. They were on time, fast, professional and even understood my hyperventalating over my great great grandmother’s china cabnet and glassware. We had to use them 2x actually once for DH’s bacholor pad and once for my storage unit when we moved after the wedding.
The price was awesome, I think total it was about 1100 for BOTH.
Inital estamates for our now 4br apt move to a house locally are 1500-2k (we have more crap now… lol)

We used move me dc 2 times. Both were around 400-600, once from an apartment to a house, and once from a house to an apartment.

Thanks for the replies so far, bees! I also got a lead from the maintenance folks at work. Depending on their quote I think we might go with them even if they aren’t pros. They’ve moved others at my workplace before. And they’d be motivated not to break my junk since they’d be seeing me around the job all the time.

@pfinarffle: Who are you using? I live in Southern Maryalnd and I’m moving to NoVa at the beginning of February so we’re looking for movers as well!

@CaliHoya: My Mother-In-Law highly recommended A-One Moving. I emailed them for a quote and they never got back to me, which was a disappointment. Maybe I should’ve called them? There’s an 800 number. She said that they moved a famiy piano superbly and were reasonably priced. I don’t currently own anything super heavy or expensive, so I don’t know if I’ll need a professional job. Depending on what my coworker will quote me, I might just go with him since he’s moved others before and driven trucks. What few valuables we have, I will move myself in our SUV. And what money I save on the move will go towards new furniture that will get delivered to the house. At least that’s the plan for now.

@CaliHoya: I gave the A-one folks a call yesterday and they got back to me right away. I think we’ll have them over early next week for a quote. They have $40k of insurance on their move, and they move you regardless of weather, snow included. They quoted $140/hour (insurance included). Not sure if that’s kind of high compared to what other bees have gotten. But hey, a guaranteed move in the middle of winter might be worth that price for us!

@pfinarffle: Good point. We’re moving in February and we’re worried about snow. I’ve seen around $114-180 an hour so $140 seems right in the middle.
