Cineplex Odeon and Empire Theatres are the movie complexes in our area

@housebee:  Anything you can buy in the US probably won’t be usable in Canada – if you buy a gift card in the US, it’s for the US branch of a store and will be in US currency.

ETA – I just noticed the Amazon card option in the poll, which might work; some things can be shipped to Canada from amazon.com, and if they have a Kindle they could use it for sure.

Cineplex is the biggest most popular choice around here. I would defenitly go with them 🙂

I agree with a PP.  Even if you get a chain that we have here, you can’t actually use the gift cards here because they’re not in Canadian dollars.  Amazon ships to Canada, but it’s often too expensive to make it worth buying anything there.

Really, if there’s just a couple of them, I’d risk it.  If I won, I’d realize I couldn’t use it and just give it to somebody else at the wedding, no big deal.

You could always get them a gift card they could use before they leave to go home. And if they don’t win you could use it?

I’m thinking something like Victoria Secret, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus etc.  A store we don’t have in Canada to make it more special for them.

Lol, not only will some things not work easily in Canada, because they might be in US Currency… or for the American version, and not Canadian version of a store.

BUT there is also the real fact that because Canada is HUGE (much like the USA) it is possible to find chains that aren’t even nationwide.

Cineplex IS NATIONAL = http://www.cineplex.com and is the prominent player here (133 Theatres)

The other example given… Empire is much smaller and not a big player in all provinces (they have just 53 locations across Canada)

So if Movie Tickets are your thing… I’d go with the Cineplex option.

    Hope this helps,

I would just have the cash on hand, in case they win.  If they’re from Calgary, chances are they go to Montana and/or Idaho on occasion.  Give them the $20-40 that the gift card is worth and say “sorry, we thought you might win, so we have cash for you instead.  You have to spend the equivalent on a date night!”

As others have said, Amazon shipping is usually obscene for crossing the border.  There’s a small chance that they use one of the shipping outlets in Montana and order stuff from the states, but it’s usually only people who have a friend that lives closer to the border.

Starbucks gift cards work both ways. You can also get master hard or visa gift cards. They should work anywhere.

You can purchase amazon gift cards for other countries online, I have friends in the UK that I have purchased amazon.uk giftcards for and I’ve purchased amazon.com cards for American friends and family. Just make sure if you want to go that route to buy the card for Amazon.ca.
