I started out by knitting swatches on 7 needles.  My mom and grandma taught me when I was really young, but I didn’t really start knitting a lot until I was 12 or so.  Once you figure out the basic knitting motion, the easiest thing that I found to knit was a hat using circular needles.  They’re basically 2 mini-ish needles connected, and you can just knit without having to switch needles.  I got pretty good at doing it.

The size of the needle corresponds to what type of object you’re making.  Usually the yarn or the pattern will specify the recommended needle size as well as how many stiches go to an inch (for sizing purposes).  Usually for thicker yarn, you use larger needles (that’s my favorite to go with because everything gets made really quickly).

I hope this helps!
