I lovemy Nikon DSLR, and I have heard many point and shoot owners rave about the little brother point and shoot that is the coolpix. It is a great price at just over 100 dollars, and takes great quality pictures. You have a great MP ratio and decent zoom on a small digital camera. I have heard minor cons with this that have to deal with battery life mostly, but you will find that in most cameras.

Another option that has similar specs and price range is the Sony cybershot. I have not owned one of these, but have heard from friends it is overall a decent camera. You can read tons of reviews on Amazon.

If I were saying to stay away from any…well, I have had lots of cameras, and the only one that pooped out after a relatively short period of time was my samsung digi-cam. It took absolutely beautiful pictures for a point and shoot, but it plum-out died on me a little after the 2nd year.

LOVE love loooooove my panasonic.  I have the slightly older one ZS8 (the only difference is ZS9 records video in stereo and 8 was mono).   Not the most compact, but amazing size for 16x zoom.  Quick start up, great pics.  If you want really compact, and dont care about zoom as much, any of the Canon IS series is great and most in the 125 range now.
