One thing I would have LOVED to have done (and didn’t, darn it!) is to rent a summer camp as a wedding venue. This way, you have the outdoor camping aspect, beautiful settings, and LOTS of things to do! The cabins are all there, everything is all set.

@MamaHusky3: I know!!! I love it!!! Someone was telling me about a campground in Orlando where all the trailers are old airstreams, etc, that would be awesome for a wedding! Maybe you should have a Destination Wedding πŸ˜‰  I have a 1973 Winnebago I could sell you, it has all 2009 parts now, LOL! It’s also been in one wedding now so it has experience πŸ˜‰

Darling Husband and I had a campground wedding! We loved it! It was so relaxed and fun, we had bbq food, an outdoor dance floor/stage, our alter decor was two white picket fences, and a good majority of our guests stayed the night and camped out!

To me, they look like any wedding that’s in a beautiful outdoor space. I had some friends get married along the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon and there was a big meadow for the ceremony overlooking the river and everyone sat on blankets. For the reception, there was a stone building that held the buffet. There was no formal seating for the buffet, everyone just pulled up a seat wherever. They had booked a group campground area that had all of these amenities which were private.

Sounds so fun! I say go for it unless you have a bunch of prissy people in your family.

@bakerella: Those Airstream parks are popping up all over the place. My parents sold their 1960’s Airstream to a man who wanted to open one in England.

@Mrs.LetsGoPens: That’s awesome! Darling Husband desperately wants one. I love our Winnebago but it has it’s drawbacks. Something towable would be really fun, and come on, Airstreams are just cool! I’d totally love to own a trailer park if it was a cool one like that!!!

I really really REALLY wanted to do our wedding at a camp (like summer camp – with cabins – not tent camping). But we would have had to rent out the entire camp and I just couldn’t afford it. Having the camp for an entire weekend (complete with canoeing, ropes course, etc…) would have been so much for! But, alas, our wedding will have at least 300 guests (the boy works for our church so we feel like we need to invite the whole congregation) and it was just not feasible.

We wanted very much to do a camping wedding in the woods. But it was a complicated search! The biggest drawback was that most of the sleeping arrangements were bunk bed or dorm style at summer camps. Most of our friends are 30+ and coupled/married, older relatives might have had problems with the overly rustic location, and almost half our guest list was coming from far away (far out of state), and many would want comfortable bedding after traveling.

We compromised by finding (after a loooonnng search) venues that offered a nice outdoor location, but more private sleeping arrangements. The one we ended up choosing had a combination of fancier B&B style rooms, economical motel-style rooms, and not-so-rustic cabins near the lake. It ended up being pricier than we wanted, but still far less than it would have cost us in the city. (And cheaper than some of the campgrounds I contacted!)

Here is my venue research list (for upstate New York and New England), for anyone interested in a woodland or outdoorsy wedding!

  • Wedding: April 2011 - in the woods

I am so thankful I found this thread! My fiancee and I are getting married in the woods, too! Isn’t it such a fun idea! : ) And I may be partial, but I think our wooded weddings will be held in the most beautiful venue ever: the great out-of-doors!
