Sooooo………I did my dress shopping. I have to say, my first time experience was pretty good. I was the only one in the salon trying on dresses, so I got all the attention and help I needed. What a relief!
The Maggie Sottero gowns I tried were all very pretty. I’ve decided to stay away from the gowns with the longer trains and pickups, primarily because I found them bulky and heavy. I’ll be an August bride, so wearing all the extra layers might prove to be uncomfortable.
I tried on the Adelaide and I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it! What a beautiful and simple dress. I just felt more like me in that dress (and it looked great too). I felt like I could just hop off the pedastal and go for a stroll in the dress. It was very, very comfortable. I’ve still got to try on the Maude. The store I went to carried it, but it was only available in a size 6. There’s no way I’d ever get that dress on me at this point…not in a million years. Hopefully, I’ll find another salon that carries a sample in a larger size. I can’t make a decision if I don’t at least try Maude on for size.
Hopefully I’ll be able to find another salon that carries the dresses I want. I’ll be keeping all the Bees posted!

@Maria444: I wouldn’t say it was heavy, but it was hot. I also wore a full slip. Since my fittings were during the summer and first thing in the morning, I thought it was the salon with the a/c not really running yet. Day of, Oct. 26th, I realized it was the dress & slip. I could sit, although I felt like I was going to fall off the chair. The one thing I couldn’t do was kneel – we had a Catholic ceremony, and at my last fitting I realized I better make sure I could stand, sit, kneel, repeat. I couldn’t get up from the kneel, so luckily the priest let us stay sitting.

Thank you! That’s super nice of you. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up buying her because I’m getting married on the beach in Mexico and she looks light, but there is some HEAVY satin underneath that lace. I’m having something very similar custom-made though with just a light silk underneath. It’ll be a little less dramatically mermaid as well.
Thanks! i haven’t spent a whole bunch of time in her, but I did not find the lace to be itchy at all. There was no beading on it which I quite liked (more comfy that way) so nothing scratched either.

In Maggie sizes, I am a 14 top/waist, and 18 bottom…. My dress is a 14 (because it’s A-line, the dress flared out at the hips and the 14 was able to fit well).
I personally don’t like ballgowns (I’m only 5′, so they swallow me up… plus, my Fiance has stated he hates big poufy dresses because he wants to be able to hug me without tons of poufy fabric in the way!), and I think an A-line will be gorgeous on you!
Ruching is every plus-sized gal’s friend (especially asymmetric ruching!), and I loved the asymmetric ruching on the BACK of my dress, too (it worked well to minimize my backside/hips).
Here’s my Maggie Sottero Jessie:
Not the greatest picture – the salon would not let us take pics so we had to sneak this one. I also was unable to get a pic of the back, sadly.
Chiffon, as much as I LOVE it, was not nice to my giant hips… here’s me in another Maggie (Lillian… it’s now discontinued). MUCH less flattering, but at least you’ll be able to see what chiffon does to a pear-shaped girl for comparison!
P.S. I am also an August bride, and my dress is Organza… it’s NOT heavy or bulky at all! Very comfortable, and feels lovely.

Well, just got back from a trip to Toronto to visit family/try on dresses. HUGE disappointment at the store. It was more like a massive (and dirty!) warehouse of dresses. They were all stuck in plastic bags. The saleswoman told me to “have a look at all the dresses” while she went to the back to see if she could find any MS dresses that were on my list. While she was gone, I tried to look at the dresses, but as they were in the bags, I had NO clue what they looked like. The dresses she finally pulled were SO not me. She stuffed me into and pulled me out of dresses at break neck speed, each dress being more terrible than the next.
I was in tears when I left…such a depressing experience. Totally different from the bridal store I first went to.
I shall brave the bridal stores again soon, but this time, I will absolutely avoid any places that seem like more of a factory production line. I’ve learned that finding a dress has a LOT to do with customer service!
p.s. @lovelove28: I tried the Jessie dress last week at a salon really close to my house – it was very beautiful. You look so great in that dress!

Maggie Sottero Fiorella….bridal sz 12…no alterations. I too am ‘busty’….so I liked the one shoulder….made me feel a little more comfortable than going totally strapless!

I’m sorry for your crappy experience =/ I’ve never been to a salon that doesn’t have the dresses hanging in clear plastic bags though? They need pictures on the bags because yeah… who can tell??

Thanks!! I love my Jessie. 🙂
I’m sorry you had a crummy experience… can’t imagine a factory line for dresses. The place I wound up buying my dress from was sooo welcoming and comfortable! And she didn’t pressure me in any way or make me feel uncomfortable at all. She actually ENCOURAGED me to take lots of time considering, and have my friend take lots of pictures, because, as she put it, “this is a huge decision, no need to rush!!”
And, best of all, she had the model photos of each dress attached to the clear plastic bag so you could SEE the dress! Loveee my boutique. Wish you lived in New Jersey!
Hope you have a better experience next time, I can’t wait to see which Maggies you like! 🙂

I’m scheduling a few more appointments at various stores near me. I KNOW they HAVE to be better than my Sunday fiasco!
Would be nice to be living in the US cause everything is so much cheaper than Canada. Oh well.
When I narrow down my selection, I’ll take a few pics and post them to get a little feedback!

I tried on a Maggie dress very similar to yours. Nixed it in the end cause I realized that I’m not a lover of the ruffle. The ruching looks really nice though. The crystal detailing adds so much to that dress!
