I have been wondering this for awhile…can anyone REALLY afford 5k for a photographer? Just for clairification…I AM NOT SAYONG THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT OR DESERVE TO GET PAID ANY LESS, but my whole wedding budget is under 5k. I just wanted to get a feel for the stats on this!

@Mrs. AF:I should proofread my statement…LOL, I meant saying not sayong!

I’ve realized that people are willing to go into debt for “perfect” photographs. My entire wedding budget is under 10k so i obviously cant spend 5k on photographs either.

In my area I think 5k is on the higher end. We paid $3500 for our photographer. We are buying parent albums which will increase our photo costs to around $4,000. I do feel like you get what you pay for though because a lot of less experienced photographers are less expensive.

Totally depends on your overall budget! For some people, 5k is a large part of their budget; for others, it’s very doable.

Our photographer is $3000, with a budget of $10,000 but if our budget was higher (~15,000) I think I’d definatly be willing to go up to $5000 without a question.

You can edit your posts for up to an hour… I do that all the time when I make silly typos!
But to answer your question. Yes… We can afford it. But this is only because my parents are helping us fund our wedding. If we were paying for it ourselves we would not be able to afford a photographer at that price.
That doesn’t mean we’re going to do that though! When I got my first quote for $5k I nearly fell off my chair!! I would like to spend around $3k but I’m asking for a lot — 2 photogs, 8 hours of coverage, disc with rights, and epics. So when you want as much as I do the price goes up fast.
Not everyone has to do that though and there are photogs that range all over the board.
I also think the costs have a lot to do with location and the quality of photography you are looking for. You will have a hard time finding a good photographer in the NYC area for under $1k because the cost of living is higher.

I’m in the same boat, my budget is around $6K-7K so I can’t afford to spend $5K either. It’s also hard for me to relate to that though because I haven’t come across many photographers who charge that much here.

Here’s a recent thread about what different Bees paid for photography in relation to their overall budget.: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/how-much-of-your-budget-went-to-photography
I used to have the same reaction as you when we first got engaged (“What, 20K for a wedding? Are people crazy?”). Once I started the planning process and started researching prices I had to adjust my expectations drastically. We ended up spending almost twice the amount I was initially shocked at.

Our photographer was $6,000 but I am obsessed with his pictures so it was well worth it to me.

We spent that, and more at the end of the day because of extras we added to our album and some prints we bought. And no, we didn’t go into debt for it.

Our photography costs were well over $5k. It was in our budget and it was my #1 priority (I got one priority, DH got one, he chose food), so we made it work. I’m really happy with what we’ve seen so far, although I’ve also seen amazing photography for far less. I’d had my heart set on this one photographer for three years, so I cut back in other areas in order to have him 🙂 I’m all for doing what fits in your budget. I never would have gone into debt for it if it had come down to it.

I am not willing to go into debt either and I am lucky to have a photographer friend who has been doing my family photos for 6 years. I was just looking in the area we are having our wedding(MONTANA) and saw 5,6,7k packages. I didn’t think that was normal for that area where the average home costs 100k.

Thats pretty high and I nearly fell off my chair when I saw photographers that cost that much too. Though, now that I’ve done some research and wrapped my head aroudn photography cost in the area, the ones I’ve been considering are about 4k, so it wouldn’t be that far a stretch to make it to 5.

Our photographer’s actual price was $5000, but we scored 30% off thanks to an Offbeat Bride discount.
