[1] You should go however you are comfortable. If they’re any good at color matching, they will remove some makeup first – but they won’t need to remove a lot. Most places will do a thick stripe on your face typically with some on your neck. They can apply more makeup to cover up what they removed. I’m also someone who doesn’t want to go “naked”

[2] You’re not required to buy it. If they only match you, most places won’t expect you to buy anything, but it’s appreciated I’m sure. If they spend the time to do more than match, it’s appreciated if you purchase something. I see nothing wrong with taking a sample home w/ you (I prefer to see it in a few different lightings) BUT if/when you purchase go back to whom tried it on you.

[3] Ulta should do color matching, but I actually have no idea. I have only gotten a sample of a foundation one time, and it was from my hair girl and in a really lousy container – it dried out in a few days (it was her new favorite foundation, I didn’t ask for it). I’ve had to return foundation 4 times, and before I bought the 3rd asked for a sample adn they said my sample was trying it on my hand in store – are you even joking??! In my experience, all of the department stores color match – but sometimes the STORE lighting is off. I’ve occasionally tried the color stripe,a dn then walked outside to check in daylight. Some people are better than others at matching. I think that MAC has great shades, but I’ve had problems with their foundation (most that I tried broke me out). Estee Lauder always has ads in my magazines about giving away samples of foundations. I think Clinique has pretty good foundations as well.
