Sure – it’s not a complex dress. You could even buy the black dress from a cheap shop and just have the lace overlay made. Make some calls to sesmstresses in your area and ask them if they can make a dress/es from a picture.

The only thing I’d be wary of is that the skirt is quite full, so you’d need quite a lot of fabric. You’d also need to consider that certain parts of the lace needs to be used for certain areas of the dress (e.g. the scalloping could be used as the edging to prevent the need for a hem).

I’d definitely find a seamstress first and get their advice on fabric before making the purchase. Best of luck!

I sew quite a bit (I’m making my own wedding gown, actually).  I agree with the previous poster; if you can find black dresses to go underneath, and have someone make the lace overlay, that would probably be the best way to go in terms of cost.  If you’re ok with the skirt being less full, that would also cut down considerably on the cost because that fabric is fairly expensive.  Plus, working with lace is pretty labor-intensive, so it probably won’t be cheap in terms of labor costs either.  But it definitely can be done!!

Hey! The shop that made my wedding dress also makes bridesmaids dresses. They are very reasonable and they will also work with materials that you send to them. My dress was $750 including shipping if that give you an idea, and of course a wedding dress is much more complicated. Here’s a pic of my dress:

PM me if you’d like my lady’s info!

gijanedoe:  No they are not, unfortunately. 🙁 I’m still sure a local seamstress could make that within your budget though.

gijanedoe:  I think that’s a reasonable expectation, especially if you’re paying for the materials, as long as someone can make the dresses for a decent price.  The price of the lace seems about right to me for the quality you’ll be getting.  A lot for a bridesmaid’s dress IMO, but it is gorgeous and very unusual, so it would probably be hard to find a less expensive material that you would be happy with.  I would try to get a firm price from some dressmakers before you order the fabric, and make sure it’s something that will work with your bridesmaids’ budgets.

gijanedoe:  As long as you know that the dress won’t be exactly the same then I think it will be doable. Without a pattern you can never truly replicate a piece of clothing.

But I think you should check with your bridesmaids on a budget before going ahead if you haven’t already.

It sounds so fun to recreate this dress!  A black tank dress like this would work great for the base:

I would suggest finding a dress pattern for the overlay to take to the seamstress, like this one: http://www.simplicity.com/p-11719-misses-dress-in-two-lengths-with-bodice-variations.aspx

Since your wedding is a year and a half away–I would just wait until you find another dress that you love. I think that when planning a wedding it’s easy to get fixated on certain things when it doesn’t really make sense. For a while I was dead set on a certain dress, but I’d have to travel to another city, take a day off work and jump through hoops just to try it on. I eventually realized that those were probably just signs that it wasn’t meant to be. I found another dress that I’m super happy to have bought. I’m sure that in the next year you will find dresses you love just as much. The major stores will be releasing entirely new seasons/lines in the time before your wedding.

I might have to agree with above poster having your bridesmaids do custom dresses seems like alot of unnecessary work when there are plenty of bridesmaids designers who sell lace dresses that can come in different colors. Also you could probably even find something similar in a formal dress not even necessarily a bridesmaids dress.
