If this is true then apparently I’ll be offending someone at my wedding :p

@amarasmi:  If you’re not Jewish, and you’re not having a Jewish ceremony…then it’s not a chuppah. (I am Jewish and would not be offended/confused by a square canopy at a non-Jewish ceremony.) Do what you want!

@amarasmi:  I’m Jewish and I don’t care! A wedding canopy and a chuppah are pretty much interchangeable regardless of the shape, though the square is more generally traditional. Do what you want! It’s not like we own square canopies 🙂

There’s a lot more than being square to a chuppah, and not all chuppahs are even square! You’re fine to have a square wedding canopy!

Many cultures have wedding canopies of some sort, and many couples have one just because they like the look of it, without any cultural or religious significance at all.  And as others have said, a chuppah is often not square.  (The most traditional type is a tallit (prayer shawl) suspended from poles, which is typically rectangular rather than square.)  If you don’t call what you are having a chuppah, it’s not going to offend any Jewish people.

Chuppahs do not have to be square, and I don’t know why someone said it was more traditional.  It’s just cheaper to have them square.  It would only offend me if your husband broke a glass with his foot and you all said mazel tov, haha.  Congratulations!

Have what you like, I really can’t imagine someone being upset over you using a square canopy. There is much more to being jewish than a chuppah.

amarasmi:  I’ve had a lot of friends who weren’t jewish have a chuppah because they liked the idea of it. I wasn’t offended. If you like it, do it.
