@accorn: They usually take ours back. But what if you “lost” it?

I think you have to give it back if they see that you have it. I’m not really sure about the different state issue. No clue…

But I’ve heard it’s illegal for the DMV to let you keep the old one if you show them it. Or, you can just say you’ve “lost” it and they’ll replace it with the new one. They can’t do anything about it. I was reading a blog about a lady who got married and asked if she could keep her old one but the clerk said no, but if she had wanted to she could have lied and said she lost it. I think that’s what both my parents did. It was neat seeing my parents as teens! Ha!

Sorry, hope that helps somewhat.

It is illegal for you to have more than one. Best bet is to tell them you lost your old one.

@accorn:

I only really know about ny, but when you change your residence to ny, all you have to do is go to a ny DMV with your current license, social security card, and if you’re changing your name as well, your marriage license, and go through the process. You do not need to contact anyone ahead of time, and they will not let you keep your old license because you cannot be a resident of two separate states.

NC recently started mailing all state driver’s licenses from Raleigh. I got a temporary one from the DMV, but they never asked about my old driver’s license. They were supposed to take it but didn’t, so I just took it out of my wallet and kepy it for sentimental reasons.

Also, in NC, you have to get a driver’s license before you can register your vehicle in the state. You also need a valid registration from your previous state. Not sure about your state’s rules.

@accorn: I’m not sure what part of TX you’re in, but when we moved to Houston Fiance had to change the registration on his car before he could get his license.

It varies state by state. For state of MN all they do is clip the end of your old DL and you must carry that and the paper work until you get your new one.  I used to have all my old ones but they were shredded couple of moves ago.

In Michigan they didn’t ask for my old one at all last time I got it renewed.
