@MsPoodles:  Yes!!! That is the whole point of a bridal shower / baby shower etc.

The word “SHOWER” in it means to shower the new mom to be / new baby with gifts. That’s the whole point! To help get her started in her new life with her new bundle.

@UpstateCait:  personally im not asking people to shower us with gifts… im gonna let the guests know that we’d prefer 1 of their favorite childhood books instead of gifts to help build our daughters library. as i said earlier the majority of my friends and family are not doing too well in this economy :-/ soooooo… MY shower will not be traditional at all… games… music… cocktails (even though i cant drink them ::sigh::) … dancing … a fab party! what better way to welcome our bundle of joy?! =) every1 has their own vision though

All of my friends who are having baby showers this year are throwing there own. So, lots of people do it.

That being said, I think it is rather rude and tactless. I couldn’t imagine inviting people to a shower that I am throwing for myeslf, asking them to bring gifts/telling them where I am registered, and even planning my own shower games. If no one offered to throw me a shower, I would rather not have one.
