We did, but it wasn’t anything special or anything. We just invited some friends over to my DH’s parents’ place to swim in the pool, have some beers and eat burgers. We told everyone no gifts.

Go ahead and have fun.  An engagement is cause for celebration and you should not miss out.  Your idea sounds fun and not gift grabby at all…besides in our families, e-parties are not about gifts at all.  No one brings gifts. It’s about getting together, having fun and celebrating with the couple.

In Fi’s family, it’s tradition for the groom to throw his bride a serenade, which is the engagement party and it happens closer to the wedding with a mariahi or trio.  I am so excited for this.

@jo.lee:  in what way is it less of a gift grab if someone else throws it?

we did our own thing by just sending out word via text and Facebook that we would be at our favorite bar the friday after we were engaged– something simple like “we’re grabbing drinks on Friday to celebrate if you guys are free!”  there were no presents– we were there practically every weekend anyway, so it was really just a normal night, but we had a lot of friends came out and my coworkers did buy tequila shots.
