Since black tie optional isn’t a real thing and an afternoon, outdoor wedding on a ranch doesn’t exactly scream black tie, your dress is gorgeous and you should absolutly wear it!

Oh wow, that’s gorgeous! I would absolutely wear it. If it’s “black tie optional,” chances are that they just want to indicate to everyone that they should dress up, and that totally looks dressy to me. Patterns can totally be formal.

hikingbride :  Agreed. Black tie optional isn’t real, and a 3pm wedding on a ranch isn’t close to black tie haha.

I’ve noticed that the definition in Latin America of what is semi-formal or formal is different from the US. In general terms, I’d say that what is considered semi-formal in the States is almost seen as casual in Latin America; the formal in the States is semi-formal in Latin America. Also, do not be mislead in thinking that a ranch equals rusticity; there are haciendas in Argentina (and elsewhere in Latin America) that could make Buckingham Palace pale in comparison!

hikingbride :   scissorgirl :  not sure you why you think that black tie optional isn’t “real” – it’s absolutley an actual dress code.

esaints2 :  i think it’s a gorgeous dress, and you might be able to get away with it here in the states…but i’d be wary of cultural differences. if you know the bride well, or know any of the bridal party, i’d show them a picture and get their opinions. south american tends to be dressier than the US.

Black tie optional is not a thing.  Something is either black tie or it’s not.  In any case, I think your dress is great and sequins would look ridiculous outside.

ilovesophia :  It’s not a real thing because black tie is ALWAYS an option for a wedding. If you are having an actual black tie event and/or the venue requires a certain dress code, then yes, by all means request black tie. Otherwise, saying ‘black tie optional’ is redundant. You don’t tell people there are apples in apple juice, because duh, there always are. If you aren’t having a black tie event and/or the venue doesn’t require a certain dress code, it’s incredibly rude to try and dictate how your guests dress.
