I’m not sure how far along you are, but many women experience low platelets during pregnancy in part due to your increased blood volume. The platelets are what allow you to form a blood clot and prevent you from having bleeding difficulties during labor/delivery/epidural. This is very common. If you have time see if you can get a referral to a hematologist (blood specialist) to see if they can offer you anything else. Good luck.

You won’t get an epidural because if your platelets are low you are at increased risk for bleeding. Bleeding in the epidural space (near your spinal cord) can be dangerous, so that is what they will want to avoid. That said, the link posted goes into possible reasons pregnant women get low platelets – I’m sure your doctor is keeping up with it! 🙂 Good luck!

@Derbybride   that is very frustrating, but I think you still have time to read up on basic relaxation/Lamaze techniques if it would make you feel better.  Do you have any girlfriends who are also pregnant and maybe just took the class?

Sorry I didn’t see this until now, but if you have further questions I might be able to help.

I just found out I have this, too.  I’m getting re-testsed next week, so I’ll see what the #s are then if they are still low (and my anemia stays low…at least it’s improving).
