We are going to change the batteries…I think Fiance should take a look at the wiring just to be safe.
Going back to sleep was realyl hard…kept thinking “what if” there is an electrical fire in the attic we cant smell or see and we wake up with the roof over our heads blazing.

I had the same thing happen not too long ago. About three nights in a row it happened and definitely scared us! My Fiance was insistant it was the battery and changed all of them. It didn’t help and I knew that smoke alarms chirp, not go fully off when the battery is low. After some Googling we found like others have mentioned moisture and dust can set it off, but that wasn’t our issue. How we fixed it was testing and resetting each alarm. Ours are hardwired into our house and are all connected together so by doing this we reset the circut and haven’t had a problem since!

I was going to go with the supernatural aspect…I know all the other bees told you it’s the machine itself, but I have heard that between 3-4 AM is the true witching hour and that most unexplained phenonmen happen during this time….don’t mean to alarm you (no pun intended)….but just thought I would put my two cents in….

@RunsWithBears: Yes, good question.
Our battery operated alarm went off last week too randomly and my Darling Husband believes that it wasn’t the fire alarm but the Carbon Monoxide monitor. The was a car parked right outside our gate just running…not sure if that was the cause or not.

we had this a few months back. 4 am our smoke alarm starts blaring for no apparant reason. after we had managed to switch it all off,get back into bed,laugh at ourselves and just started to drift off back to sleep. Next minute the carbon monoxide alarm goes off!quite frankly we sh*t ourselves both times, and have never moved so fast in our lives!Never did work out what caused it, Im thinking it was probably just a blip haha.

@bakerella: Agree….it will have been some weird electrical surge!

One of my fire alarms started going off randomly once…but not like a constant beeping, just a little beep here and there. I changed the batteries several times and it STILL kept doing it.
My FH took it off the ceiling to have a look at it, took the batteries out…and it STILL kept beeping :/ We didn’t live together at the time so when he went home he took it with him to have a look at and it kept beeping in his car.
But it got weirder….the alarm was with my FH, in his car, miles away…..the same beeping continued in my flat despite the fact it was also beeping in my FH’s car. WTF?! We never solved that mystery, it just stopped one day.

Mine does this too! Always between 3-4 am. It happened again last night. It is random and we can’t stand the low battery chirp so we are always putting new batteries in. I can’t help but think ghost too 🙁
